Her minör dizi, bir majör dizi ile aynı notalardan oluşur, fakat notalar farklı sırayla dizilmiştir. Bu durumun tersi de geçerlidir; aynı şekilde her majör dizi de, bir minör dizi ile aynı notalardan oluşur. Her majör tonunun, altıncı derecesindeki minör tonuyla ilgili bir ilişkisi vardır. Bu ilişki, aynı notaların kullanıldığı ancak farklı bir ton merkezine sahip iki ton arasında gerçekleşir.
